Chapter 14

I close the barn door behind me and wrap my body in the blanket. Anton is standing with his back to me and sweeping the piles of hay.

He doesn’t turn around to face me. “Go back to the cabin. There’s nothing for you here,” he commands coldly.

I put the blanket down on the pile of hay, pet the horse, and approach Anton.

“What do you want?” He stands up straight and makes a fist.

My teeth chatter from the cold, but I keep going forward and stand behind him.

“What do you want?”

“You,” I whisper, putting my hands on his back.

His shoulder blades tremble, and suddenly he turns around and wraps his arms around my waist. He swings me into the air, and I wrap my legs around him and stare into his feverish eyes.

“I don’t need you to comfort me,” he whispers angrily.

He still looks so enraged, but nothing he can say or do will make me leave the barn now.

“Yes, you do.” I graze his wounded lip with my fingers. “And I need you too.”

He groans softly and walks ahead, still carrying me, until my back bumps into the barn wall. His eyes ravage my face with forbidden longing. He pushes his pelvis towards me, then releases my hips and cups my cheeks. He lets out another groan and tucks my hair behind my ears.

I close my eyes to avoid seeing the disappointment on his face. I won’t let his longing for her break my heart.

“Open your eyes,” he whispers hoarsely.

I shut them tighter and shake my head no.

“Open your eyes so you can finally understand that I’m not searching for her.” He runs his thumb over my upper cheek. “So you can finally understand that I’m making sure it’s you.”

I open my eyes in surprise.

“I can’t remember the exact moment that I realized I was crazy about you.” He presses his thumb against my bottom lip. “So crazy about you that I’m on the brink of losing control.” His eyes dart across my lips, and my heart pounds. His words materialize as if from a dream, and I don’t want to wake up.

“Anton,” I whisper, trembling. “The first time you walked me home, you were right.”

He continues to touch my lips and shakes his head in incomprehension.

“You were right when you said no one has kissed these lips.” I lick the lip he is stroking. “I should have given you my first kiss then, too.”

He looks up at me and then cups my cheek and tilts my head to the side. “Ania, I’m going to take it right now.” His eyes are filled with passion. “I’ll take your first kiss and settle for that alone.” His lips are close to mine, almost touching, teasing me, testing my incredible need for him, but before I can protest, he moans softly and bombards my mouth. His lips collide with mine, biting, sucking, devouring, and I try to accommodate his longing. His tongue penetrates my mouth, and the kiss becomes fierce and urgent.
